Heme B is a part of the hemoglobin molecule, the molecule that is responisble for the transportation of oxygen in blood. The hemoglobin molecule contains four polypeptide chains (a tetramer), each chain consisting of more than 140 amino acids. To each chain is attached a chemical structure known as a heme (HemeB) group.
Heme is composed of a ringlike organic compound known as a porphyrin, to which an iron atom is attached. It is the iron atom that reversibly binds oxygen in the blood.
