Product Description
Track gauge for code 83 rail at a gauge of 12mm. This is the standard gauge for TT scale (1:120). It is also used to model 3'6" narrow gauge in HO scale (1:87), known as HOn3½ or HOn42, and European 'metre gauge' in HO scale, known as HOm.
The gauge is designed to work with code 83 rail that conforms to NMRA recommended practice RP-15, for example the code 83 rail produced by Micro Engineering.
The gauge has four prongs to hold the rails parallel for ease of laying track. The prongs are placed more widely apart on one side to spread the gauge slightly on curves. The widely-spaced prongs go on the outside of the curve.
3'6" gauge was once common around the British Empire and is still in use in several former British colonies, including New Zealand, South Africa, and parts of Australia. Japan uses 3'6" gauge on JR lines except the Shinkansen network. Taiwan and Indonesia also use 3'6" gauge.
There is less equipment produced for HOn3½ than for standard HO, but there are some products available. Wuiske Models produces locomotives and rolling stock of Queensland prototypes, as well as bogies and wheelsets. HOn3½ bogies can also be purchased from https://www.shapeways.com/shops/sarmodel and HOn3½ wheelsets are produced by Steam Era Models.
