The Type 96 Land-based Attack Aircraft 'Rikko' was designed for the Imperial Japanese Navy in the early 1930s to combine outstanding performamce, long range and a heavy bomb (or torpedo) load, as a result it had a very light structure and minimal defensive features. The aircraft first saw combat in 1937 during the Second Sino-Japanese war and updated versions continued in front line service through 1943 when then were progressively replaced by the G4M.
This model is representative of the early versions of the aircraft before the dorsal 'greenhouse' was replaced by a powered turret.
The spherical depression underneath the model is for mounting it on a 6mm BB.
