USS Mercury (AK-42) was launched as the Type C2 freighter ship SS Lightning and put into commercial service as SS Mormactern in 1940. She was acquired by the US Navy in 1941, converted and commissioned as USS Mercury in July 1942. She survived the war and was decommissioned in May 1959 and struck from the naval register August 1959 before entering the National Defense Reserve Fleet before finally being scrapped in 1975.
