Metropolitan 1925 experimental electric stock
Motor coach
After successfully introducing new electric trains on the Metropolitan Railway from 1904 , new stock was introduced from 1913, based on the 1905 design, with improvements and an elliptical roof instead of a clerestory one.
Further ideas were introduced in 1919 with one full set of 1905 stock being rebuilt with swing doors. Times at stations were improved but the narrower doors caused confusion and the experiment was discontinued. The motor coaches were subsequently rebuilt as all third trailers, and newer stock was introduced in 1921 with 3 sets of sliding doors on each coach side.
As electrification exended along main lines, experimental saloon stock was built, similar to 1921 stock. It was found that passenges preferered compartment stock so they switched to designs based on Dreadnaught coaches for allnew electric trains.
The experimetal motor stock eventually ended up on East London line as a 3 car unit coupled to firstly 1919 stock then 1921 stock, and were finally withdrawn in 1950s.
