1/87th stacks of empty fruit picking lugs.
This size was used for picking fruit and not for shipping in refrigerator cars.
I am working on the shipping kind and hope to announce those as well soon.
These are the size that I saw and worked with in the 60s and 70s. It is likely
that they were used far earlier then that and may still be used in the present.
I no longer live in California nor have any connection with farmers.
My summer jobs as a teenager involved cutting apricots and peaches. My sister (now deceased) and my brother in law both worked in the packing houses when they were teenagers. This size of lug was used to deliver the fruit from the orchard to us.
Other then the very very rare new box, these boxes were always nearly completely black. Unused boxes do eventually turn grey. They would be stenciled with lack paint for the owner of the boxes. In my experience this would be the farmer. The stenciling was almost completely invisible except on a new box.
Be sure to thoroughly clean off remaining wax residue from models. I use 91% rubbing alcohol and an ultrasonic cleaner.
