This model is a 3D Celtic Knot cube generated using the seed 12. It matches with the 2D version that uses the same seed and can be found here: http://shpws.me/3L1b.
Like the 2D version, the model has four loops and the weave has been set to add a gap between the threads where they cross. In the final print though, many of the threads have fused together at the intersections. Nonetheless I'm really impressed with the results and the print works very well in spite of the really quite thin (0.7mm diameter) threads.
Note that the colour image is purely to illustrate the four different threads. The model doesn't actually contain colour data.

That's a fantastic idea. The knot is surprisingly sturdy (it benefits from the strength and give of WSF) and I'm sure it could handle what you propose. As you point out though, the problem is that it's not exactly clear how this could be actually achieved in practice. I plan to print more in future without the fusing at cross-points. I'm not sure if this would allow more leeway for fitting a glass orb inside, but I'll give it some serious thought once I have a model to test it out.

Would the integrity of this model allow for carving out a central sphere? Imagine a glass sphere trapped inside a bronze knot. Once someone figures how to print and cure mixed media, this would be awesome beyond belief.
