Marble Runners: Satellite and UFO in strong and flexible plastic.

Because I already had several in the back of my sock draw, marbles were an easy choice to set things in motion. They roll so well on their own and would also provide that extra bit of weight to propel the light-weight plastic forward.

The challenge began with designing the cage that surrounds the marbles. I needed to allow enough room to easily get the marbles in and out while still keeping them in place. Initially, I worked with two different ideas but eventually decided to produce both versions as a pair, one as an orange Satellite and the other as a yellow UFO.

The thing that I did not anticipate, though--and this is visible in the video--is the way the light refracts through the marbles as they roll. It creates this shimmering/flickering effect that really catches the eye. Just a slight flick of the wrist is all it takes to send these off rolling and spinning. Each works with three, 5/8" dia. (16 mm) marbles, the most common type around.
