This is a new type of keycap I decided to try out for my mechanical keyboard. It's made out of 2 materials and is supposed to look like some kind of canister full of molten metal. I always liked the idea of doubleshot keycaps (More info about them here https://deskthority.net/wiki/Double-shot_molding) because of the high contrast and more advanced designs you can get with them compared to just a single colour. I suppose this was my way of doing a doubleshot that was a little more "out there" than just logos and letters.
The core "molten metal" part was printed in frosted detail and used fluid simulation in blender to achieve the bubbly effect. The canister is matte bronze steel. I'm pretty pleased with how it looks especially with the backlighting behind it. I'm also very happy with the feel of it; The steel outer section makes it feel quite solid and chunky.
I've just uploaded it to my shop https://www.shapeways.com/shops/gizmobazaar so it should it should be coming online any second now and these are the 2 actual item pages:

Guess now I've just got to come up with some other designs that use multiple materials!

Reminds me of the way some people use capslock :-D

Very cool! Is the steel key heavy? I imagine a keyboard full of them would be pretty chunky.

The lava in your pictures makes them pretty crowded, and takes away from the key in my opinion. If you could do them on a plain background, I think they'd pop more. Maybe an assembled off the keyboard pic as well?

The steel key is definitely heavier than any plain plastic ones but it just gives it a nice solid feel. I'd agree with you, a keyboard full would probably feel a little too much like a typewriter or something!
Thanks for the feedback on the pictures. I might snap some more tomorrow with a more subdued background :)
