custom wax miniatures from photos

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by 591783_deleted, Aug 4, 2014.

  1. As a kind of joke we want to make wax miniatures of people we know, at low cost They don't have to be very good, ust recognisables (for example with the name on the base to help frame expectations

Is there anyone here who has tried making copies of people out of wax from photos that can be e-mailed rather than 3D scans?

What sort of cost would we be looking at if we are paying someone else to do it as opposed to doing it ourselves

If 3D scans are essential then what kit would be needed.

    thanks

You would need a very good sculptor who can look at the photos and make a 3D sculpt from the 2D data. To hire a sculptor would be outrageous because each sculpt would take a bare minimum of several hours to produce. If you're just doing some one offs for your friends then it's not really a problem, but if you're going to try to do it as a business then you're going to need do it local and 3D scan the subjects.

Are you just wanting to do this for some friends that you know?

We are actually digitizing friends around us at Singapore by structure sensor, which is portable 3D scanning device.
As their developer, we are also working on full body scanning app now.
If you wanna go with 3D scan, that's a good option

Here are a few of my friends....The quality is really good for a 500 USD device.

But we have some issues when trying to submit to shapeways says "Model is not manifold." Is there anyone got the same problem? We are still exploring....

Can you send a private message with a stl file to see what is going on it ?

Have you checked with (free) netfabb studio basic ? Possibly scanning left some small holes or overlapping facelets in the bust, or its bottom is not attached correctly. (It does have a bottom - or is it just open on the underside, which would leave you with something like an inifinitely thin balloon skin, i.e. a non-manifold object ?)
