One more bit of 3d-print related excitement in my home today. This sculptural light design took a lot of tweaking to make 3d-print ready, and finally the first prototype arrived from Shapeways. The renders of the original design are meant to be quite large pieces, made in stainless steel and gold-plating, but this first prototype is a small 5"x5" in scale and printed in polyamide. Quite happy with how close it resembles the renderings. Would love to hear your thoughts! It's gorgeous! I like how you really played to 3D printing's strengths, the lacy pattern probably can't be made any other way and is a central part of the design. How do you light it? Regarding the metal version, Shapeways doesn't print stainless that big, but those would be impressive!
Thanks Marcus! That was my goal when I set out to design this thing, so I'm glad it came across in the finished version. Here I used a small lamp as the light source, but in the final 'chandelier' versions I'll have to integrate the piece that holds the light-bulb into the exterior sculptural form. I'm gonna try to get a stainless steel or gold-plated version as large as shapeways printers will allow. I imagine this will cost me a fortune, probably over $1000 but I think it'll be worth it to have that one polished piece. I ask about the light because I just received a lamp (will post pics shortly) and am looking for a better lighting solution. I'd love to see a large version too!

it's not a good idea to print it in metal. you'll never get that glossy feel you're after.. it will be heavy, small and the design requirements are much more stringent. there's coating solutions that can make the WSF or whatever look like metal. cheaper and lighter.. apart from that the WSF itself looks pretty good, the tranparancies are an added bonus. maybe coloured? you can colour them yourself. also, you could make bigger lights by cleverly cutting up the model, i see some symmetries so you could have a lamp made from 8 identical pieces or something. when enlarging, try keeping the thickness of the part low, it'll be cheaper AND you'll still have those transparancies to play with..
