Shapeways
is always on the lookout for ways to spread the word about your 3D
printed projects and recently we have been experimenting with a new Shapeways Tumblr feed.  We have been testing the format with the type of posts that are most popular from articles, links, videos, the Shapeways widget and images.

I recently posted an image on Tumblr of a quirky concept by Cunicode for the Octo Handle Cup, which is part of a One Cup A Day project.  A great idea to do a design a day to stimulate your creative juices and generate some interesting items.

The Octo Handle Cup has struck a chord with the caffeine junkies on Tumblr and it has now spreading across Tumblr with 85 90 notes and counting.

Why use Tumblr I hear you ask when I already use Facebook, Twitter, Friendster, Flickr, MySpace, StumbleUpon, Skyrock, Renren, LinkedIn, LiveJournal, Mixi, etc. etc. etc. etc.

Tumblr has one great advantage over many micro blogging applications in that each post generates a unique URL, you can of course set it up to send your posts to both Twitter and Facebook to kill 3 birds with one stone, the interface is quick and the output is very easily customizable.

With Tumblr it is also very easy to reblog a post which is what has driven the success of the Octo Cup image.

So far we only have 169 176 followers on Tumblr (even less before the Octo Cup) but this still has worked as an incredibly effective base to spread the image to 90 other Tumblr accounts. Now if each of these people has 100 followers on average, you are very quickly exposed to 9,000 people and on and on it goes.

Aside from this you can also tag your posts with anything you like but popular themes like #tech #crafts #design #wtf means that you can also find your way into peoples search queries or even picked up by the Tumblr team and put into the front page for these tags.

We have already seen some considerable traffic and revenue come to Shapeways via Tumblr and we have only been experimenting for a very short time.  If you already have a Tumblr account follow us and we will be sure to follow you too. If you do not have a Tumblr account yet, sign up and spread the love.

Warning: Tumblr feeds can become very addictive.
