Getting started with the CustomMaker tool

INTRO:

Customization is an incredibly powerful tool to make products more personal and meaningful to a shopper. But even for an experienced 3D modeler, customizing a model by hand is time consuming and can be challenging. Adding text and images to a model involves a lot of time and technique, and there are many variances to take into account. For example, it's necessary to account for a product's curved surfaces, or an image's photo properties, such as its white balance, that may affect how a 2D image converts into the desired 3D effect.

We’ve tackled this issue by creating our new CustomMaker tool. It allows you to easily make your model customizable for shoppers based on your artistic vision in just a few easy steps!

STEPS:

1. Enable your product as customizable under the Customization section in Model Edit Details tab with the CustomMaker option. From there, you can either add a ‘text box’, an ‘image box’, or one of each to your model by clicking the spot on your model you want it to show up.

Once the type of customization has been selected you can set these different parameters:

  • Size
  • Location
  • Rotation
  • Emboss height or engrave depth

Once you click ‘Preview Settings’, you will see a preview of what the model will look like customized with some default text (‘Typography’). (In preview mode, the model will be displayed in our new beautiful shopper viewer which is 100x faster than our existing customization preview with ShapeJS co-creators.)

When determining what customization settings apply, remember that your settings apply for all materials your product is available for sale in. Make sure to choose a height that is at least as tall as the minimum detail guideline for all your materials, which can be found in our material guidelines. We’ve created a summarized table for you for quick reference:

Material Minimum Size for Engraved Details Minimum Size for Embossed Details Notes
Strong and Flexible Family 0.2 mm 0.2 mm 0.5 mm for Readable Text
Metallic Plastic 0.7 mm 0.7 mm
Polished Metallic Plastic 0.8 mm 0.8 mm
FUD/FXD 0.1 mm 0.1 mm
Detail 0.2 mm 0.2 mm
Platinum & Gold 0.35 mm 0.40 mm
Premium Silver 0.35 mm 0.40 mm
Raw & Polished Silver 0.3 mm 0.3 mm
Precious Plated Metals 0.35 mm 0.40 mm/td>
Brass/Bronze Raw 0.30 mm 0.35 mm
Brass/Bronze Polished 0.35 mm 0.40 mm
Steel 1.0 mm 1.0 mm

Please keep in mind:

  • Currently, you can set one global emboss or engrave height for all enabled customization regions. Right now you can set a maximum of one of each type of customization region, so this only applies if you have set up both an ‘image box’ and a ‘text box’ on your model. We are working on enabling you to set different engrave and emboss heights per region for the future.
  • We currently don’t support color models (important if your product is available for purchase in Full Color Sandstone).

2. Based on the settings you choose, a shopper will be able to either purchase the base model or personalize your design with a text or image on the product page.

On the product page, a shopper will have two choices - to purchase the base model or personalize it for themselves. If a shopper on the product page clicks ‘Add to Cart’ without inputting any personalization information, then the base, unpersonalized model will be added to cart. If a customer clicks ‘Add to Cart’ when a shopper has filled in text and/or uploaded an image, then their personalized model is added to the cart.

If a shopper fills in any personalized information (text, image, or both), the shopper will instantly be able to see what their model will look like in our new shopper viewer. Our new shopper viewer is extremely fast and provides instant preview of your product personalized with your shopper’s text and/or image. We recommend adding in some guidance for the shopper as to what kind of image they should upload in your product description (usually simple, black and white images).

Our new shopper viewer doesn’t actually contain your 3D model, rather it displays hundreds of images sequentially when you move a model around. This makes it feel to a shopper like a traditional 3D viewer but without the risk of someone being able to download your copyright-protected product.

Once your shopper purchases their personalized product, we will create their personalized model based on your settings and add the model into the shopper’s My Models as an un-editable product. This means they can repurchase the product whenever they want, but they can’t download or edit the model. You will receive markup every time a shopper repurchases your model.
