Really Big Tiny Things

A destination for high-quality models of the little bits of life. I take crystal structure data for protein and nucleic acid complexes and design printable structures to put on your desk. I am happy to take suggestions, so just send them my way!

About
Welcome to my shop!

I am a PhD student studying molecular biology, and I have always been fascinated by the tiniest parts of life. On the scale of molecules, a living creature is a chaotic pool of spinning, swarming, colliding particles that somehow work together in a system much, much bigger than themselves. I want to share some of my fascination with you through 3D printed models of my favorite proteins. Digital renders of these proteins are out there, but I found that I could never fully grasp what the molecule looked like until I could get my hands on it.

So that's my goal: let people put their hands on some protein structures and literally get a grip on molecular biology. I write a detailed post on the history of each molecule in its description, along with some additional reading for the extra brave and/or curious. I hope you find these structures as beautiful as I do! And of course, if there is a protein you would like to get in your hands that I don't yet have on my shop, please just send me a message and I would be happy to design one for you. Unless stated otherwise, all my models are designed off of data submitted to the Protein Data Bankwhich is an incredible open resource for scientists, hobbyists, and enthusiasts. Every month David Goodsell features a protein or complex from PDB in his Molecule of the Month, and if you like anything you see in my shop, you should absolutely spend some time there as well.

All the best,
Michael
