Recommended island to build USS Yorktown CV-5 (1942) from:
Scale: the box of these kits is erroneously labeled as 1/700 scale.  The true scale of the model kit, when compared to measurements drawn on official US Navy blueprints of the actual ship, is 1/719 scale,  This island is precisely scaled for your Tamiya kit.  This island is not suitable for Trumpeter, Pit-Road/Skywave, HP-Models and Mini Hobby Models 1/700 scale kits; it is 2.7% smaller.  Click here for an accurate 1/700 scale USS Yorktown CV-5 island scaled specifically for Trumpeter.

This accurately shaped and highly detailed model represents the 1942 appearance of the island of celebrated US Navy aircraft carrier USS Yorktown CV-5, veteran of the Battles of Coral Sea and Midway, where she was lost.  Her wreck was discovered by Robert D. Ballard and his team from National Geographic in 1998.

This model is intended to replace the less-accurately shaped and poorly detailed plastic kit parts, perfectly complimenting your Tamiya kit.

Features:
  • fully assembled
  • overall dimensions accurately scaled from official US Navy plans drawn by Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Company, dated 1940
  • details specific to USS Yorktown confirmed by careful study of builders plans, period photographs of the real ship and photos of the wreck

From Wikipedia: "USS Yorktown (CV-5) was an aircraft carrier commissioned in the United States Navy from 1937 until she was sunk at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. She was named after the Battle of Yorktown in 1781 and the lead ship of the Yorktown class which was designed after lessons learned from operations with the large converted battlecruiser Lexington class and the smaller purpose-built USS Ranger. She represented the epitome of U.S. pre-war carrier design.

"Yorktown was laid down on 21 May 1934 at Newport News, Virginia, by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co.; launched on 4 April 1936; sponsored by Eleanor Roosevelt; and commissioned at the Naval Station Norfolk (NS Norfolk), Norfolk, Virginia, on 30 September 1937, Captain Ernest D. McWhorter in command."
