The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was the world's heaviest, tallest, and longest-spanning bridge at the time of its 1964 completion, weighing 1,265,000 tons, rising 693 feet, and spanning 4,260 feet. A monumental project initiated by Robert Moses to connect Brooklyn and Staten Island, it is still easily the most prominent landmark of its community district.

This souvenir, a trophy to our former World Heavyweight Champion of bridges, memorializes the contentious procedure of creative destruction and the infamously subtractive forces that were intertwined with the addition of the bridge. Typical of the controversies that surrounded Moses's other public works across the New York City metropolitan area, it extensively leveled both buildings and topography on either side of its span during its construction, thus displacing thousands of residents in the process. The bridge also led to the demolition of Fort Lafayette, a historic diamond-shaped island fortification on whose foundation one of the bridge piers now stands.

This trophy captures a hybrid geometry between two architectural icons: the skewed plan of the absent fort, and the elongated elevation of the bridge's pier that occupies that same site. The fort's architecture was composed of semi-circular arched ports on the interior, with rectangular and semi-rectangular apertures puncturing its thick exterior wall. Conversely, each pier's rectangular outer-silhouette and open, semi-circular archway are frontal and monumental; in a way, transposing and flattening the same repeated geometries from the fort into one plane. Thus, dynamic interdependencies of solid and void, arched and rectangular, and frontal and oblique are formalized in this trophy, prismatic in its outer shell and yet contorted in its internal articulations of presence and absence.
