1/48th Scale ROCKET BOOSTERfor the <strong>Mach 4 GTD-21 CIA Drone Spyplane that was launched from B-52's during unmanned reconnaissance flights of China during the early 1970's. The drones were initially launched from the back of 2 specially modified Lockheed A-12 Mach 3 spyplanes which included a rear-seat operator for launching the drone.
Due to an in-air collision during the last launch attempt which resulted in the loss of both the drone and the M-12 mothership and one crew member, a new method for air-launching the drone from B-52 bombers was designed and included the use of a large rocket booster. This large booster was necessary to accelerate the drone at a speed of more than Mach 3 so that its air-breathing ramjet engine could be started. It is this variant of the D-21 which performed secret flights over China.
