Able to assists the public safety in their roles, this accessory has been built as add-on for DJI Phantom 4 drone and on the basis of 3d scan reference provided by Shapeways. The accessory is a loading system for two light buoys that can be released in sea during rescue operations and able to emit fixed or blinking light visible from long distance. This specific project is referred to a light buoy than can be used by rescue team to mark the position of shipwrecked people, in a typical night time operations.
The buoy presented here (light version) con also be pre-configured as: a) buoy with beeper/gps system: it can send an electronic beep and/or a geographical position signal at defined intervals and on specific radio channel. Typical use: in every kind of rescue conditions, night and day time operations. b) buoy with smoke: when released, it emits red smoke for some minutes.
Typical use: day time and low visibility operations. Note that all the orange pieces visible on the Figure 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 will be printed with 'Strong & Flexible Plastic' provided by Shapeways.
The system presented allows Phantom 4 drone to load two light buoys for rescue operations. Weights have been distributed mainly on the of the aircraft, to ensure front adequate balance during the typical flight posture, and have been calculated on the basis of previous experience with 'Strong & Flexible Plastic'. The result of calculation shows that 1 cm3 of ‘Strong & Flexible Plastic’ equals to 1 gram weight.
The global weight of the accessory (included of aluminum bolts, battery packs, circuit, wires, etc.) is 320 grams, against a total available payload of 462 grams for DJI Phantom 4.
Furthermore, buoys are released by means of 2 spare functions/buttons (left and right) visible on the rear of drone remote controller (see Figure 3).
REMOTE CONTROLLED RELEASE SYSTEM (see Figure 1, 2 and 3)
This system is composed of:
a) 2 release mechanisms (left and right), composed of servos, teflon arms, structure, bolts and pin in aluminum, cable and wires, etc. - 2 x 75 grams;
b) 2 covers to protect the release mechanism from dust and rain. This pieces are printed with 'Strong & Flexible Plastic' - 2 x 6 grams;
SIDE SUPPORTS (see Figure 3 and 4)
This sub-system is composed of:
a) 2 side supports to retain buoy and limit its movements during flight. This pieces are printed with 'Strong & Flexible Plastic' - 2 x 15 grams;
b) 4 blocks to hold left and right supports to drone. This pieces are printed with 'Strong & Flexible Plastic' - 4 x 1 grams;
c) aluminum bolts - 4 grams;
LIGHT BUOYS - (see Figure 1, 5 and 6)
To complete buoy, the following materials are needed:
a) buoy side A (right) - 2 x 10 grams;
b) buoy side B (left) - 2 x 10 grams;
c) circular cover (top) - 2 x 1,5 grams.
d) 10 white leds 1,5 volts - 10 x 1 gram;
e) 2 battery packs 6 to 7,5 volts - 2 x 25 grams;
f) 2 electronic circuits for light on/off - 2 x 4 grams;
g) aluminum bolts, cables and wires - 5 grams.
