Product Description

Palmetto state was the stronger of the two Richmond class ironclads completed at Charleston. She was strongly built, but curiously altered with two pivot points at the corner knuckle of her fore and aft guns, and only a single broadside piercing. She gave good service, and in the company of Chicora, challenged the North Atlantic Blockade Squadron successfully on more than one occasion. She was burned to prevent capture in 1864. Our best data shows that Charleston was probably painted in a Robins Egg Blue for the majority of her career; this may have faded - first to a tan color, then to an oxidized red over time. As an interesting side note: while records do indicate that her sister ship Chicora carried a spar torpedo into combat on at least one occasion, as did Charleston, we only have photographic evidence that Palmetto State did so of all four completed Charleston Squadron ironclads!
