1/87 Empty Citrus shipping crates without lids
. Dimensions came from discussions on the Citrus Industrie Modeling Group on Yahoo and specifically from Bob Chaparro. This was used for shipping. These models represent the crates either before the top was put on in the packing plant or as they might have appeared in shops. The period seems to be from at least the early 20th century to the 1950s. Some may have still been used into the early 60s. They were replaced with card board boxes by the 1960s. You will need to find appropriate labels to scale and print for the ends. If the models you receive are not clean and crisp you may need to clean off remaining wax residue. I use 91% rubbing alcohol and an ultrasonic cleaner. Some use Bestine. The parts are brittle so do not scrub them with anything. Frosted glass shot was used to make the fruit in the example image.
