GWR Cordon, Part 3 - Gas Tank (Left hand end without gauge).
This kit is for a member of the ‘standard’ Cordon Gas Tank Wagon, the single largest class ever built. It is a twin tank mounted on a four-wheeled underframe.
History
At the end of the 19th century, the Great Western Railway had an extensive network of stations, depots and facilities which required gas lighting and heating. Even more important, almost all passenger rolling stock was lit by gas lamps. In order to provide a suitable supply of gas, most locations had direct connections with gasworks. These wagons were given the Telegraphic code “Cordon”.
However, where a connection to the gas main was not possible the GWR developed some dedicated tank wagons. They were dispatched full to specific locations and replaced as necessary. Usually they were kept in conveniently placed sidings, close to where the gas would be required.
The GWR produced them in various batches over many decades, consequently there were a number of different designs: single, twin and triple tanks, mounted on various different underframes. Some were actually one-off models, built by recycling parts from dismantled wagons. Cordons were built with anything from bogie coaches underframes to freight van bits and parts. To make the matter more complicated, the GWR often kept the same registration number even when a wagon received new tanks and a different underframe!
Some light filing between two coats of primer is recommended to remove any ridges on the curved surfaces. Two small loops of handrail wire will be required to loop throught the four holes at the end of the tank (see detail photo.
To complete the wagon you will also need the following:
suitable wagon buffers;
couplings (NEM straight shaft type);
Part 1 - Gas Tank (Left hand end with gauge);
Part 2 - Gas Tank (Left hand midsection);
Part 4 - Gas Tank (Right hand end with gauge);
Part 5 - Gas Tank (Right hand midsection);
Part 6 - Gas Tank (Right hand end without gauge);
Part 7 - Chassis
Handrail wire, Glue, paint and transfers.
