Saccharomyces Yeast Earrings - Science Jewelry

Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast) is not only an indispensable organism for baking bread, brewing beer and making wine but also is an important model organism for scientists. In addition to being easy to grow, Saccharomyces is also easy to genetically transform and is used for the production of recombinant proteins. These proteins include biopharmaceuticals necessary for the treatment of diabetes, hepatitis and anemia as well as proteins studied in many other scientific disciplines besides medicine.

The Saccharomyces model depicts yeast cell division, called 'budding.' The larger mother yeast cell is giving rise to a smaller daughter cell. The mother cell shows budding scars from previous daughter cells.
