Reindeer have been revered by many cultures for their wisdom and resourcefulness.
They are considered sacred by various Native American tribes and were held in similar regard by the Ancient Greeks who viewed them as messengers and associated them with journeying, safe travels, strength, and endurance.
This fact undoubtedly served as inspiration for the 1823 poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" which linked reindeer with Santa’s sleigh and refers to the Reindeer "As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky".
