This ring represents Gjergj Kastrioti’s (Skanderbeg) shield. The heraldic double-headed eagle represented the Kastrioti noble family emblem during the Middle ages. It was under this shield that Gjergj Kastrioti fought the Ottoman armies for 25 years to protect Albania, Christianity from the Turkish expansion to Europe. During this time the Ottomans had captured Constantinople, the capital of the Bizantine Empire but tasted only defeat and humiliation against Albanian forces. The Albanian armies were light but swift and never surpassed 10,000 men. Skanderbeg was one of the most prominent military figures of 15th century. He obtained the title of Athletae Christi (Christ's champion).
