The Hydrans are an unusual species that live on the far side of the Klingon Empire, along the edge of the galaxy. They are enemies of the Klingons and Lyrans, and were conquered by those empires at one point, only to drive the invaders out decades later. Hydrans breathe methane and live on cold type-S gas giants on silicate continents floating on liquid methane oceans.
In the opening battles of the General War, it quickly became obvious that the pre-war frigate classes of most empires were too small to survive in fleet combat where the enemy’s opening salvo often blew up a frigate just to let the enemy know that a true battle was in the offing. The Hydrans, desperate for a quick fix, simply took the design of their standard Cuirassier (and Hunter) frigates and split them down the middle, adding more power, weapons, and other systems in the volume thus gained. The Federation gave it the reporting name “Rhino Hunter” to reflect that it was a Hunter-class frigate “with a horn like a rhinoceros.” While the Cuirassier mounted one hellbore, the Rhino Hunter mounted two, with a similar expansion of the other elements. (Federation intelligence first thought that the ship had a single “larger hellbore” but it had two standard-sized weapons.)
The ship is available in a variety of materials. Ships are unpainted, use standard flight stands available from many sources, and, while designed for gaming, make fine display pieces.
