Product Description
BackBone He2 (Helium): Three Position Garmin Mount

The He2 does not require additional screws or zip tie fasteners, it comes complete and ready to mount from Shapeways. The He2 is also a multi-positional mount, use it in a hi or low forward position or over the stem. It works with Garmin Edge 20, 25, 200, 500, 510, 520, 800, 810, 820, 1000 and 1030. The He2 weighs in at 12 GRAMS COMPLETE (the OEM forward mount is 27 grams), and is at home on your mountain, road or commuter bike. A “below deck” clip for mounting anyting with a Garmin 1/4 turn geometry.

BackBone He2 fits all 31.8 mm diameter handlebars and is carbon bar safe. It will accommodate oval or “aero” profiles as well.

Assembly and Mounting

Once you receive the He2 printed parts it is important to inspect all features on the parts. You may want to use a toothpick to clear out any residual “build material” (which will look like dust) that might have made it past the Shapeways technicians. Because of the precision and small size of the features, it is necessary that all surfaces be clear of unwanted material for proper function of the part.

Before you insert the 3D printed set screws into the part (see image sequence above), you may need to clear out any loose or packed-in build material from the screw driver slot. Once the set screws are screwed into the main body they will spin freely. We recommend inserting the threaded strap ends into the body and tightening, before mounting to the handlebar, to test fit and “break in” the naturally rough printed surfaces. Note; As you use the mount the interface between the set screw and strap will become smoother and have less resistance.

Also inspect the eighth turn mount feature (where the Garmin locks on) for any residual build material. Typically this is not a problem, but there may be unwanted material packed-in around the locating features (protrusions left and right).

Mounting Torque: Tighten the set screws just enough to secure the mount to the handle bar, do not over tighten. Important: The force required to lock the mount in place is very small. Although the “strong and flexible” nylon material is extremely tough, the threads can fail if over stressed in the mounting process. For additional grip, apply one layer of electrical tape to the handle bar, left and right, corresponding to the attachment point of the He2’s mounting arms.
