The Unisphere stands 140 feet high in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Built for the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair the Unisphere quickly became an iconic symbol for all of Queens. The sphere honors the start of the space age, representing the earth with no state lines and tracing the paths of three significant space faring achievements: the Telstar, the first active communications satellite, Vostok 1, Yuri Gagarin’s first manned flight into space, and Mercury-Atlas 6, John Glenn’s first manned orbit of the Earth. These paths echoed the theme of the worlds fair, “Peace Through Understanding” and stands as a testament not to the achievements of one country or people but to humanity as a whole.
