The Spiroidea figurine is based on a tile from Alim Pasht-Han's ARURA vase created for the Leuchtenburg Porzellanwelten (Porcelain Worlds) museum in Seitenroda, Germany. Inspired by plate 22 of Ernst Haeckel's 'Kunstformen der Natur,' the Spiroidea painting and 3D-printed figurine are a synthesis of the structures of several different organisms in this Radiolarian family. Radiolaria are unicellular zooplankton that make intricate silica-containing shells to protect their soft amoeboid bodies.
I created the Spiroidea figurine at the request of the Leuchtenburg to help promote the collections of the museum.the pendant is available at the museum shop and here at Shapeways.
The 5cm tall figurine is 3D-printed in steel and infused with bronze before being cured in an oven. This process gives it a warmer color than typical stainless steel. Because of the fine detail on this piece, when you receive it from Shapeways, I recommend that you take a straight pin and gently remove small pieces of the polishing material used during production from the holes.
