While the 4000ton frigate might have been considered the equivalent of the Oliver Hazard Perry class frigate, the Chinese frigate bears a considerably more important mission: It serves a similar high sea patrol role to the Sovremennyy class destroyer currently also serving in the PLA Navy - the smaller frigate holds the YJ-83 missiles that has less firepower than the Sovremennyy's P-270 Moskit, but the two ships share similarly capable radars, and the incoporation of a data link and vertical launch systems ensures that the smaller frigate enjoys a better interception capability.
