Product Description

Two trefoil bands loop round a central torus, supported by a complex web, and mirroring each other as they interact. The texture was inspired by the microscopic structure of xylem cells in trees, which transport water from the roots to the leaves.

The Xylem Double Toroid prints sucessfully in metal, so this bigger  version is an experiment to see if it can be printed in ceramic. It is exactly the same model, but scaled up to a nice size to meet the ceramic printing and firing requirements, and will make a beautiful small sculpture if sucessful (glossy red is my favourite, though the oribe green will show the textrual details better).

The one drawback is that Shapeways can't glaze it all over - it has to be unglazed where it touches the floor of the kiln.

It is a very complex shape to cast - shapeways make a negative mould and then pour liquid clay into it, this is then fired in a kiln, and then glazed by hand.

The automatic checks say it may well work, but its the mould-making that will be the challenge. I'm releasing it in beta with no markup in case anyone wants to give it a try! Feedback, suggestions and photos gratefully received.
