SET OF SIDE-FRAMES AND PILOTS FOR CHIVERS FINELINES/FIVE79 RC27 GE END-CAB LOCOMOTIVE KIT
This is a set of pilots and side-frames designed to be used to finish the Chivers Finelines/Five79 RC27 End-cab GE diesel locomotive. Axle spacing has been designed to permit the use of a slightly modified Graham Farish (Bachmann UK) N scale Class 08 mechanism.
Although these parts were designed to suit the RC27 kit the designer believes that they can have other applications.
Please note that these parts must preferably be applied to the shell underframe before assembly of the rest of the kit can begin.
- Clean the flash from the kit frame. Using a set of calipers make sure that the frame edges are parallel to each other.
- Using a jeweller’s saw or a hacksaw with very fine teeth, CAREFULLY hack away the block located on one end of the sideframe. Smooth cut area using a file.
- Take the mechanism from the locomotive and using jeweller’s saw or a hacksaw with very fine teeth, CAREFULLY hack away the block located behind the motor. File the cut area smooth and square. This will allow the mechanism to fit inside the shell underframe.
- Insert the mechanism inside the shell underframe and carefully centre it. Make sure that the motor faces the rear of the locomotive frame. This is the moment also when one can mark, drill and tap the holes needed to fix the underframe to the mechanism. The designer suggests using the stock GF holes and screws to holds everything together, holding everything together using the two holes present in the front of the mechanism. Or, alternatively, just stick it to the chassis using two bits of double faced tape… :-D Before mounting underframe and mechanism together the designer suggests adding a 0.3mm plastic shim to the ends of the mechanism, this will ensure that the gearbox will clear the inside of the body when it is put in together later.
- Now comes the fun part :-D – take the printed parts, remove them from their sprue and clean them of all printing marks ans support material. Make sure that side-frames can slide into the notches located onto the back of the pilots with little or no pressure.
- Test fit the front pilot (identifiable as the one which has notches behind the steps) on the underframe. Although the designer has made every effort to ensure that the part will work out of the box, dimensional variations in the underframe or printed parts might mean that some filing and fitting will be required. After making sure that everything fits, glue part to underframe using 2-part epoxy glue making sure everything is neat, square and parallel with the underframe sides. Let the glue set.
- Repeat the previous operation with the rear pilot (the one without the slots behind the steps).
- Now comes the fiddly bit… :-S fit the side frames onto the slots present in the back of the front pilots. You will soon notice two details – a) the sideframes have two long longitudinal depressions on top, these must be laid pointing towards the front of the locomotive otherwise everything will end up crooked… and b) they won't fit! Don't worry, this was done on purpose – because the white metal on the kit can vary A LOT in dimensions the side-frames were made longer to allow the modeller to adjust the part to fit. Carefully sand the ends of the side-frames until they enter, making sure that the axle slots are centred in relation to the crank axles in the mechanism. Once the parts fit in correctly glue them in place using two-part epoxy glue and let them set.
- Finish assembling the locomotive as per Chivers/Five79 instructions. By now you will have noticed that the front pilots have a small hole in front...this is so the coupler included in the kit can be fitted, just trill it out to the correct diameter.
