Product Description
USS Arizona was the last of two Pennsylvania class superdreadnoughts, built in 1914 and launched a year later. During World War I, the battleship was assigned to Battleship Division 8 operating on the Atlantic coast of the USA; in the 1920s was mostly spent in gunnery training and fleet maneuvers, although she was once deployed to Smyrna (now Izmir, Turkey) during tensions between the Greeks and Italians. The ship was fitted with a flying-off platform on top of one turret and underwent several minor refits and overhauls during the decade. However, in January 1929, the ship was pulled in dockyard for major modernization, including the fitting of new tripod masts, torpedo bulges, new fire control directors, and slightly thicker deck armour. The machinery was almost entirely replaced, her new turbines taken from the cancelled battlehsip Washington (of the 1920s South Dakota class) and the boilers redured to 6. In 1931 the ship hosted President Hoover for a brief vacation in the Caribbeans. After that a catapult was put on top of Turret 3, adding to the one already present at the stern.
In the 1930s Arizona took part in a number of fleet exercises and, during the latter part of the decade, refitted again with upgraded directors and AA defenses.
On December 7th, 1941, the battleship was moored at the tail end of battleship row in Pearl Harbor, in front of USS Nevada (BB-36). A massive 800kg (1760lb) bomb, converted from a 41cm naval AP shell, penetrated the decks of the ship all the way to the forward magazines. The explosion lifted the ship almost out of the water and destroyed a good portion of the forward deck, while at the same time engulfing the forward superstructure in flames. The ship burned for three days after the attack. 1177 men went down with her. Oddly enough, her forward turrets remained in place, and her gun barrels were later salvaged and replaced the worn-out guns of Nevada.
The ship still stands as a memorial today in Pearl Harbor, although she's still full of oil fuel that's a recipe for a potential ecological disaster due to the progressive decay of the wreck.
