Product Description

1/700 Scale HMS Hood Boat Set 2 (1941). A highly detailed set of replacement boats for the Tamiya/Trumpeter HMS Hood kit. Details of which boats she carried come from the HMS Association as most kits/sets are inaccurate. This set is split over two items due to the amount of detail these parts carry and technical limitations of the 3D printing process. Below is information from Frank Allen at the Hood Association to whom this set couldn't have been completed.

Boats - As for Hood’s final complement of boats, here is what I show (working from fore to aft and port to starboard): 16ft Skiff Dinghy x1 (mounted on the port side of the structure between the funnels)
16ft Motor Dinghy x1 (mounted on the starboard side of the structure between the funnels)
25ft FMB x3 (on the outer boat deck roughly abreast the structure between the funnels; two to port and one to starboard. Some sources say 2 were fitted, but we see 3)
35ft FMB x2 (There were two in the first row of boats…one to extreme port and one to extreme starboard).
45ft Motor Launch with a nested 32ft cutter (first row, just to port of centerline)
42ft Motor Launch (first row, just to starboard of centerline).
35ft Admirals Barge (port side of main mast).
32ft Cutter with a nested 30ft gig (starboard side of main mast).
27ft Whaler x2 (two aft-most boats…they could be slung out over the widest part of the boat deck abreast the after concentration position/searchlight platform (ACP)

This set contains the following boats:
  • 1x 45ft Motor Launch
  • 1x 42ft Motor Launch
  • 3x 25ft FMB
  • See set 1 for remaining boats: http://shpws.me/OuGJ

Model is optimised for easy removal from base and supports can be be kept in place for airbrushing.
Some part cleanup will be necessary. The 3D printing process uses a waxy substance to support certain part features during the printing process. Although the parts are cleaned by Shapeways, some waxy residue may remain. It can be safely removed with water and a mild aqueous detergent like "Simple Green" using an old, soft toothbrush, Q-tips or pipe cleaners.
Customers report that "Bestine" and "Goo Gone" also work well.
During the printing process, liquid resin is cured by ultraviolet light.  Microscopic bits of resin may remain uncured.
Let your parts sit in direct sunlight for a few hours to fully cure the resin.

Water-based acrylic paints meant for plastics is strongly recommended.
Other paints, especially enamels, may not cure on Frosted Detail 3D-printed plastics.

Use dedicated model sprue cutters to remove parts to minimise damage to parts.
