British Single Stage to Orbit in the 1980's! HOTOL for HOrizontal Take Off and Landing. This was a study for a single stage to orbit small cargo vehicle led by British Aerospace partnering with Rolls Royce who would be providing the ramjet engine to power this example of British aerospace engineering into space!. BAE couldn't interest the ESA, although there was apparently some interest from the USAF in the engine design. The project folded from lack of support, although the technology for this project found it's way into the SKYLON single stage to orbit craft also designed in the UK.
