With their abrupt defeat at the end of World War II, the Wehrmacht simply abandoned much of their equipment, leaving it to be captured, analysed, tested, and reverse-engineered by Allied forces.  France was no exception, and reverse engineered the King Tiger, gradually improving on the design.  One of these design iterations was the AMX-M4, a precursor to the AMX-50.  This particular version is the model 1949, armed with a 100mm gun, which saw it lengthened over the 1945 model.
