Product Description
The design of these cubes was inspired by the concrete block designed by Frank Lloyd Wright called the 'Ennis Block'. It was used on a few homes Wright designed as well as in some Hollywood movie sets like 'Blade Runner'. Wright's design was an exercise in 'shifted squares' which resulted in an asymmetrical motif. Because the design is NOT perfectly symmetrical about the diagonal, each cube I created in the series had to resolve the asymmetry issue differently depending on how the corners and edges were arranged.
Cube 03. This was the third cube in the design series. After completing the second cube, I wanted to explore another quick variation. So for this cube, I arranged the motif as a pin-wheel again, but with the dominant corner towards the outside corners of the cube face. Just like in the second cube, the motif has some thickness and the relief is mirrored on the backside. The extra thickness works in the same manner as the second cube enabling the edges of the faces to be fully connected. I still incorporated voids to add a dynamic depth to the entire design and the relief is evident on the inside faces of the cube.
