Product Description

In 1861, John Luke Porter proposed a plan for an easily produced, well armed harbor defense ironclad. The design was heavily modified and used for inspiration in creation of CSS Virginia, and the eventual Richmond class. Several of the type were ordered, but none were completed, though it is possible that CSS Richmond was originally laid down to this plan. The design was quite low on creature comforts, essentially consisting of a boiler mounted in a low lying casemate with six 6.4 Brooke rifles mounted on the centerline.
