BK-02: "BK2STMAPSTAMP" by Once-Future Office
"BK2STMAPSTAMP" by Once-Future OfficeThe BK-02 area is varied and evolving. Historic districts abut gleaming new towers. A transitioning commercial corridor connects the seat of local government with residential enclaves. Former industrial areas morph into commercial spaces, living spaces, and then destinations of affluence and tourism. Though connected and easily walkable, each BK-02 neighborhood has a distinct character.
BK2STMAPSTAMP introduces a set of stamped textures as the new cartographic standard for this area of NYC. Each surficial pattern evokes embodied experiences from BK-02’s iconography—be it a slice of pizza, ground cover, or a curtain wall in the changing skyline. What do you see in these textures? Applied in multiples, these stamped patterns carve out cartographic territory and delineate points of interest.
Eschewing the readily mass-produced, BK2STMAPSTAMP maps are made-by-hand, artisanal, one-of-a-kind. Each souvenir map of BK-02 is hand-stamped to capture the geographic and cultural boundaries of Brooklyn Heights, Fulton Ferry, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Downtown Brooklyn, Boerum Hill, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Personal memory and collective experience inform this geographic information system, capturing and re-presenting our shared spatial and cultural understanding of the area.
The souvenir stamp of this community board includes a complete set of map patterns as part of a commemorative seal for official and unofficial purposes. Make your own map today!
