Product Description
The 3in/50 gun was developed towards the end of the Second World War since 40mm Bofors and 20mm Oerlikons were proving less effective than expected at stopping Kamikaze aircraft, and only the 5in/38 fired a large enough round to take one down with a single shell. The 3in Mk 22 used on many destroyer escorts was chosen since it was the smallest round that could carry the VT fuze, although the end of the war slowed development and the weapon did not enter service before 1948 on Worcester class anti-aircraft cruisers.
It was used thoroughly between the late 1940s and the 1980s largely in twin mounts, and some are still fitted to smaller nations' warships.
The twin mount was a limitation due to the size of the gun, as it occupied roughly the same space as a quad 40mm mount, and also weighing slightly more. It was one of the first guns to be fitted with an auto-loader.
The gun was fitted on vast number of US vessels; abroad HMS Victorious received six mounts following her reconstruction in the 1950s; Spain equipped her destroyers and frigates with the 3in, as well as Norway with the Oslo class frigates.
