HO Scale CNR Flanger 56471

Canadian National Railways had a large fleet of these end- cupola, wood bodied flangers. There were many variations in the fleet, particularly steel vs wooden frames, narrow vs wide cupolas, and cupolas flush with the rear wall vs slightly inboard. Many of these cars had the car siding cut back over the blade for clearance.

56471 was transferred to the Atlantic Region in May 1975 from Manitoba, one of many similar cars displaced by western branchline abandonment. Most were scrapped in Moncton, but 56471 found a good home on CN's Prince Edward Island lines. The car served on PEI until abandonment, when it was transferred to New Brunswick. It was subsequently donated to the Salem & Hillsborough Railway (New Brunswick Railway Museum. The car was destroyed in a tragic shop fire, but NBRM has retained its frame for future cleanup and display.

This HO model includes most of the major details needed to model the car. It includes the original cupola interior (with a rather uncomfortable bench jammed near the front window), the modernized cupola interior with real seats, ventilators for the roof, a choice of coal or oil fired ("H") smoke jacks, the underslung toolbox, and of course, the flanger blade.
