WHY DO PEOPLE PLAY DIRTY AT WORK?
A thought experiment to understand it and a figurine to remember
THE THOUGHT EXPERIMENT
Imagine you are a young consultant, whatever technology related.
One day your boss asks you to go and visit an old lady living in a manor in the countryside. She is a mayor stakeholder of one of your company clients, and you have explain her about the digital transformation plans, so she can approve them.
Once in the villa the charming old lady invites you to breakfast. The lady asks you to go to the sewing room to get her cat's sandbox. She tells you how to get there.
The sewing room has no windows. Light comes from two large skylights in the roof. You find the sandbox and turn around.
A big man, dressed with some kind of pajama, covers the door. He holds an enormous knife with his right hand. No trace of reason in his eyes. Just homicidal hunger.
You look around. No way out but the door. And the insane is blocking it. He goes right to you.
What do you do?
The answer is pretty clear: you throw sand to his eyes and escape while he cannot see you.
The real question is this: Why don't you face a fight with the insane man?
Because you know you will lose it. That's why.
That is why many people play dirty. Because they are incompetent. Because they have no choice: if they play fair, they stand to lose. For them, you are a dangerous madman who gets in their way.
