This male stands 5 m (16 ft) tall.
The giraffe’s scattered range extends from Chad in the north to South Africa in the south, and from Niger in the west to Somalia in the east. Giraffes usually inhabit savannas, grasslands, and open woodlands. They can also be found in semi desert areas.
Adult giraffes do not have strong social bonds, though they do gather in loose aggregations if they happen to be moving in the same general direction.
The giraffe species as a whole is assessed as Least Concern from a conservation perspective at the IUCN, as it is still numerous, but two subspecies, the West African giraffe (G. c. peralta) and the Rothschild giraffe (G. c. rothschildi), have been classified as Endangered, as wild populations of each of them number in the hundreds.
