Greek Love Poet, 5th Century BC. Sappho was born on the island of Eressos (Lesbos) in Greece. The Alexandrians included her in their list of The Nine Lyric Poets, a prestigious group of ancient Greek poets esteemed by the scholars of Hellenistic Alexandria as worthy of critical study. The bulk of her poetry, which was well-known and greatly admired through much of antiquity, has been lost; but her immense reputation has endured through surviving fragments. Sappho died c. 570 B.C. in Lesbos, Greece. Her poems were posthumously compiled into nine books in the third century B.C.
