"Versatile" plastics have a gritty surface and will require priming with a couple of light coats of a spray filler/primer like Rustoleum. Sand between coats with fine grit paper, ending with a final 1000+ grit wet sand. Then color and clear coat for a super smooth finish. The colored plastics offered on shapeways are surface dyed and not worth the additional cost, since the majority of modelers will want to sand and paint their car.
Black Acrylate Resin plastic was considerably smoother, providing a glass smooth finish with far less effort than the "Versatile" material. Unfortunately, Shapeways just discontinued the material. Please contact them to request they bring it back. It was amazing, but there's progress for you.
You have to drill the deliberately undersized holes to your specs. Use a drill bit the size of your axle, and twist it through by hand. Start with a smaller bit and work your way up to the size need for your axle.
Show off your modelling skills! Send me pics of your builds, and I'll include them in the photo gallery with your name in the caption if you like.
