Product Description
A Five piece kit to make one of the classic 440 tank locos built for the North London Railway. This kit builds the later version with the full width cab.

It requires 21mm driving wheels and 12mm bogie wheels, plus a suitable gearbox and motor to complete. I recommend using a High Level Models & 'Road runner' gearbox in these models as they give a good quiet drive.

Simply separate the parts which are sprued together, (including the 'stud' which is attached to the underside of the cab roof!) The bogie is attached by positioning it over the pivot, and pressing this stud into the centre to retain the bogie. Side-play is achieved by the slotted hole in the bogie.

Rods and crossheads are available separately from this site (because they need to me printed in a more solid material). Paint the chassis sections black before glueing suitable top-hat bearings into the axleboxes. I would recommend using a set of Markits or similar frame aligners run through the coupling rods to ensure that the wheel centres match perfectly, before finally fixing the bearings.

Pick-ups can be made from phosphor bronze strip or similar spring wire solderd to scrap copper clad sleepers. These can then be glued into the slots under the centre frame spacer with wires run through the pre-drilled holes to the motor. I always find it best to complete the chassis and get it running first before moving onto the body.

The chassis and smokebox are made in one piece because of the tricky nature of the prototype. The boiler, tanks, cab etc slot into the smokebox, and the ejector pipe slots into the hole in the smokebox to give an apparently seamless join. Handrails need to be added, and the body painted. The cab roof is separate to allow you to paint the cab interior and glaze the large spectacle plates if you wish before fitting the roof and attaching the body to the chassis.

Fixing is best achieved by glueing a captive nut in the bottom of the bunker and running a screw through the chassis into it. The front end is secured by the sliding fit of the boiler into the smokebox and the ejector pipes and handrails clipping into the smokebox.
