Product Description
USS Bon Homme Richard (CV-31) is one of 24 Essex class fleet carriers built by the US Navy during and immediately after WWII. The ship entered service in November 1944, joining the Pacific Theatre in TF 58, participating in the Okinawa campaign and flying air strikes on mainland Japan until September 1945, when she was ordered back home to be converted into a troop transport, serving in Operation Magic Carpet until January 1946.
Bon Homme Richard was decommissioned in January 1947, becoming part of the Pacific Reserve Fleet. However she was recalled back into duty in 1950 for the Korean War, where, in an unmodernized state, saw the entire war as a very active combatant until January 1953; the previous October the ship had her designation changed to CVA-31 (attack carrier), and in May 1953 went into drydock to receive a combined SCB-27C and SCB-125 refits in one go. Recommissioned two years later, she was deployed non-stop from 1957 to 1966, including a Pacific cruiser with President Eisenhower on board.
In 1965 the Bonnie entered the third conflict in her career, the Vietnam War, deployed between 1967 and 1970; however, at the end of the last, the ship was ordered deactivated and put in the Reserve Fleet in Bremerton.
After 20 years in mothball, the carrier was sold for scrap in 1992.
