Prior to the war, there was great concern on the part of some in the Confederation Admiralty that even in a post scarcity environment, shipbuilding cadence could not make up for combat losses in any protracted war. A new clean sheet design of mass-produced cruisers was requested, and the Oriskany class was the result. Derided by many captains as the “economy version” of a cruiser, general wartime conditions proved its worth. After the war, the few surviving ships were refit to more typical Confederation design specs, increasing the science and comfort levels of the ship.
