HOn3 spring centering Sharon Coupler Box

This coupler box was developed because, 1. Sergent Brand Couplers did not supply a coupler box for its Sharon type couplers in HOn3 applications. 2. There was no provision for a sprung centering method in the Sergent design. This coupler box remedies both of these oversights. This box design also allows the user to set up the retention spring in the traditional way that the Sergent couplers were designed to work. The box is as wide as the two center sills and the space between them on most all D&RG narrow gauge wooden cars. This width allows for as much truck swing as could be made possible. There is no top to the box as it does not need one. However, you will need to add shims to the top of the box in order to get the proper coupler height. These shims need to be added to the car bottom and not to the coupler box as you want to be able to service the mechanism should the need arise.

For sprung coupler centering, the coil spring needs to be gel-super glued to the back of the coupler shank. Once that is cured, a second micro dot of Gel ACC is applied to the other end of the coil spring and the spring and coupler are placed in the box with the spring going into the little slot at the back. You may use the coil springs supplied with the Sergent coupler or, use a Kadee brand HOn3 714 coupler spring in its stead. The Kadee spring provides a less stiff operation of the centering movement.
