Product Description

An elegant design based on the Mandelbrot set offered in premium silver, platinum and gold. The Mandelbrot set, named after Benoit Mandelbrot, is a fractal. Fractals are objects that display self-similarity at various scales. Magnifying a fractal reveals small-scale details similar to the large-scale characteristics. Although the Mandelbrot set is self-similar at magnified scales, the small scale details are not identical to the whole. In fact, the Mandelbrot set is infinitely complex. Yet the process of generating it is based on an extremely simple equation involving complex numbers. Discovered around 1980, the Mandelbrot set may well be the most familiar image produced by the mathematics of the last century. Its status as a cultural icon needs no support. From a philosophical perspective, the Mandelbrot set challenges familiar notions of simplicity and complexity: how could such a simple formula, involving only multiplication and addition, produce a shape of great organic beauty and infinite subtle variation?
