It is an amaizing experience to dip this wire model into ordinary soap water: When taking it back out you will see an interesting soap film whose boundary is the wire model. Mathematically, this is an approximation of a so-called minimal surface. These are frequently used in architecture because they minimize surface tension and reach an equilibrium. The wire model shown here produces a nicely curved saddle minimal surface in this way.
